Board-Games Meeting

A memorable afternoon spent together with the youngsters from the programme that made us feel

young again! We played board games, while unnoticeably learning more about resource management,

goal setting and effective communication. We had a great fun and got to love our mentorship even

more!

Our aim was to play together – mentors and youngsters, and through playing to draw youngsters’

attention to important subjects, related to their integration and independence.  Our mentors had a day

of training prior to the meeting to make the best use of the board-games.

The meeting took place on Sunday, 25 October. A big THANK You to the House of the Three Trolls for

their warm hospitality!

Training for mentors: We are already a community!

Last week we conducted our long awaited training for volunteers- mentors of youngsters with fewer opportunities, which took place in the surroundings of Sofia. Its aim was for the team of volunteers of “Step for Bulgaria” Foundation to talk about again and in deeper details with professionals about the specifics of the youngsters raised without parents’ cares. In addition- all of us to feel ourselves as part of one team, one big community having a charity cause in common. Now we are ready to accept the needs of the youngsters more adequately, knowing that we are not alone in the fulfillment of this task.

The training is part of the project “Building up of a volunteer network supporting youngsters with fewer opportunities”, financed within The Program for support of NGOs in Bulgaria by Financial mechanism of the European Economic Area 2009- 2014.

Let’s go to the theater!

Do you remember our project from the beginning of the summer in Yatoto- “Going to the theater with children (without parents)”?

Well, the theater season started already and we chose the performance “Vecherya za tapatsi” in the Satirical Theater, which is brisk, funny and fits our audience.

Last week we visited the theater again with the youngsters from SOS ACFs “Priyateli”, “Mechtateli” and some other kids. The comedy was marvelous, our group was quite big and we are already being asked when we are going to do this again. We would like to express our deep gratitude for the support to all involved!

Walls become alive

We are extremely happy when we see the amazing results from our efforts!

On 3rd and 4th of October our youngsters found a beautiful way to transform a grey and boring substation in Sofia. During the first day, together with the painter Johan Tsenkov, they prepared the scheme of their painting. On Sunday, with their sleeves rolled up above the elbows and ready to get down and grimy, our youngsters gave life of a tiger with shiny mane (which symbolizes an animal with super power), a colorful snake, and an amiable bear with big heart.

The painting is located in Sofia, Razvigor Str No 2 (close to 4th RPD).

The whole initiative was financed by Park Hotel Inn by Radisson, with the kind participation of youngsters from Accommodation Centers for Families “Priyateli” and “Mechtateli” and “Agapediya” Foundation.

First new mentor – mentee meetings

Seeing the results of our work makes us happy! Several of our new mentors that passed the training course in July, already met with unprivileged youngsters. They already fixed a next meeting and are about to make more steps towards helping the youths’ development.

New Group of Mentors

Dear friends, once our looking-for-new-volunteers campaign was over, we organized a starter training for the new comers. These brave new volunteers will take part in the extremely difficult activity of helping unprivileged youth. In spite of the summer heats there were many enthusiasts. They went through several steps before being approved (filling in a questionnaire, interview) and soon will be ready to meet the youths and help them be independent in life.

We are very happy – for the first time our new small office was sooo full!

During two days we spoke about effective communication, volunteer work, the specifics of youths who grew up without parental care and Bulgarian laws that regulate social services.

This training is part of the “Establishing Volunteers Network in support of Underprivileged Youth” financed under the NGO support program of the financial mechanism of the European Economic Area framework program for the 2009-2014 period.

Youths-mentors meeting

Dear friends and supporters,

We can proudly publish more information about the latest meeting between our dedicated volunteer mentors and their mentees, part of Step for Bulgaria Mentor Programme.

We are extremely grateful to Hristo Panchev – our trainer-facilitator who developed and delivered yet another interesting and interactive workshop on personal finance management. Due to his efforts our youngsters are now familiar with terms from the world of the grown-ups such as pension scheme and savings account. The newly-acquired knowledge will, we hope, allow all participants to better manage their personal funds and invest more wisely in their continuous development and lifelong learning.

Hristo also introduced his own viewpoint on monthly spending and personal budget planning. Emphasis was put on the small everyday steps each and every one of us can make to improve his money management. After a brief discussion, a consensus was reached around the fact that most money per month are spent on rent and food. Our young participants also agreed that cooking your own meal makes it taste batter and allows you to experience a sense of accomplishment. Jivko, male, 17, put it upon himself to prepare banitsa for the next meeting.

We are grateful to all participants, our trainers and staff and hope to see everybody again soon.

Training course: “Introduction to Couching 2”

Dear friends,

This Saturday was very exciting for the entire team of “Step for Bulgaria”. Our new office on Alabin 50A str. welcomed its first batch of volunteers. The training that inaugurated the facility broached the topics of what couching is, what it is good for, how it can be used effectively in youth work and how the methodology brings benefits to the mentors as well. Our participants had the chance to gain better insight and deeper knowledge building upon the knowledge and competences touched upon in the first edition of the training course.

The training was divided in several modules which included practical examples for evaluation questions and tools for value recognition among others. The new valuable information aside, looking at the results of the exercises, we found out some things about ourselves as well – we are actually happier than we realize.

This training course was delivered as part of the “Establishing Volunteers Network in support of Underprivileged Youth” financed under the NGO support programme of the financial mechanism of the European Economic Area framework programme for the 2009-2014 period.

Youth-volunteers meeting

Dear friends und supporters,

we are happy to share with you the wonderful emotions that we experienced with our youths and volunteers at our first group meeting of the year.  2015. This was our opening joint event for the New Year and we wanted the topic to be something that will give a positive start of the year. One of our volunteers is a Laughing Yoga instructor and she was willing to provide a Yoga class for the youths and volunteers. Together we decided that during the class she will also give some information on the importance to think positively, to laugh more often and how it influences to our body and minds as well as to be able to relax both our bodies and our minds. Development of such abilities could be really helpful in our everyday life when we encounter difficulties and have stressful situations. Having a clear and peaceful mind in crises situations can help you come to a solution more easily and without wasting time in panic and worry. During the class, the youths at first were a little bit reserved, but with the time they fully participated in the exercises. This was a completely new experience for the youths and we are really happy that at the end they thanked us for organizing such event and wished to have more meetings like this in the future.

Monthly coordination meetings

The project “Establishing Volunteers Network in support of Underprivileged Youth”, funded by the NGO Progremme in Bulgaria under the European Economic Area Financial Mechanism 2009-2014, (www.ngogrants.bg), continues.

We started the year with a monthly coordination meetings for volunteers. Coordination meetings are the second activity planned in the project. For the entire duration of the project 24 coordination meetings are planned, each volunteer will take part in at least half of them. Coordination meetings are a place where volunteers can freely share their successes and difficulties in working with young people, to share experiences with other volunteers and play different situations. Professional support that will be provided by the coordinator will assist them in overcoming stress and build their capacity to work with young people and improve their sense of success. The opportunity to share problems and get professional support by the coordinator, who leads the meetings, is a key to reducing stress and avoiding burnout syndrome. Our goal is to build a united and cohesive team in which to exchange experiences and ideas.
